The original photograph by Howard Guest used for the Spur Leaf silk scarf was a close-up of the bark - possibly just 10cm or so.

The Trunk of the Spur Leaf Tree

This Spur Leaf tree is in the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. The tree is quite plain, which means that it has not been widely cultivated into gardens and so is now endangered in the wild. The bark however is amazing. In the winter it sort of exfoliates (there’s probably a more horticulturally correct expression) and leaves these lighter areas – this is not dissimilar to the London Plain. These seem to glisten and shimmer in the sun. Extraordinary. The original photograph was probably between 10cm and 20cm of bark, whilst the silk scarf is 1.8m long.
