Gordon Smith is Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and a Consultant in Maternal-Fetal medicine. He divides his time between research, teaching, administration and clinical practice. His research focuses on clinical and biological determinants of adverse pregnancy outcomes.

Rupa Sivakumaran was a fourth-year medical student at Girton College. She was in her first year of clinical medicine.

The scan on the screen is Mr and Mrs Mills-Thomas’ baby daughter, about five months before she was born. Mother and baby are fine.
