Mr Duncan Holland
Chief Coach, Cambridge University Boat Club
Great Ouse, downstream of Ely
“The pain of losing stays around longer than the joy of winning.”
Duncan Holland came to coach at Cambridge in 2005. He rowed for New Zealand between 1973 and 1980 and has coached rowing at a senior level since 1983.
The Boat Club is one of very few Cambridge sporting clubs to employ professional coaches. The Club’s primary aim, indeed their only statutory aim, is to row against Oxford (and beat them). The team trains six days a week either on the Great Ouse at Ely, where there are longer stretches of water or in the Goldie Boathouse gym in Cambridge.
An estimated seven million people watch the Boat Race on television.
