10m beam centrifuge, The Schofield Centre

Gopal Madabhushi is a Fellow of Girton College and part of the Soil Mechanics Group in the Department of Engineering. His research is primarily concerned with the way earthquakes affect buildings, with a view to designing more robust structures better able to withstand earthquakes.

The 10-metre centrifuge allows researchers to model earthquakes by placing up to one tonne samples (model buildings on foundations and soil/bedrock) and spinning them at up to 100 revolutions per minute. The whole sample is then shaken to simulate earthquakes.
