Mary Beard is Professor of Classics and a Fellow of Newnham College. Her research focuses on the ancient world and its impact today and she is renowned with undergraduates for her introductory lecture on lewd Roman graffiti.

Classics has been taught in Cambridge since the University was founded, however the Faculty was not formally constituted until the 1850s. There are now 32 academic and 16 support staff with approximately 230 undergraduate students and 70 postgraduates
