Professor Kurt Lipstein (1909 – 2006)
Emeritus Professor of Comparative Law
His office, Faculty of Law

Kurt Lipstein was a Fellow of Clare College who specialised in international law. He came to Britain in 1934 to escape the persecution of Jews in Nazi Germany and enrolled at Trinity College for a PhD. He remained at Cambridge and officially retired in 1977, but continued to work in the Faculty until his death at the age of 97.

Law has been studied at the University since the 13th century, making it one of the oldest studied subjects. Originally this was civil and canon law. The first Regius Professor of Civil Law was created by Henry VIII in about 1540. The Faculty has nearly 1,000 students and about 70 staff.
