Mr Graham Appleby
Head Porter
1st Court, Jesus College
Graham Appleby has been a porter at Jesus College for 13 years and Head Porter for the last five. Prior to this he served with the Royal Military Police throughout the world. There are 12 porters at Jesus, two of whom are always on duty. Porters have a variety of roles but ultimately control access to the colleges via the porters’ lodges. They do not carry bags, nor is it wise to ask them.
Jesus College has 64 fellows, 258 graduate students and 502 undergraduates. There have been many notable Jesuans, including the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge, the first protestant Archbishop of Canterbury Thomas Cranmer and Thomas Malthus, the political economist. More recent alumni include novelist Nick Hornby, playwright David Hare and Factory Records founder Tony Wilson.
