Mr Dan Cross
Cryogenics Facility Manager
Liquefier Room, Cavendish Laboratory

Dan Cross is responsible for the production of liquefied helium and nitrogen for use throughout the Cavendish Laboratory.

Physics makes extensive use of liquid helium as a cooling agent for experiments across a broad spectrum of research. Helium liquefies at 4.2 Kelvin (-269°C) and can reach temperatures of 1.3 Kelvin in experiments. Nitrogen is positively temperate in comparison liquefying at -195.8°C. In contrast, the coldest weather ever recorded on Earth was -89.2°C in Vostok, Antarctica.
