Carolin Crawford researches large clusters of galaxies and is a Fellow of Emmanuel College. Dr Crawford runs the Institute of Astronomy’s highly successful outreach programme with night viewings during the winter as well as other public events throughout the year which attract thousands of people.

Astronomical research has taken place in Cambridge from the earliest times. Isaac Newton invented the reflecting telescope and Arthur Eddington was one of the first people to prove Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity. The current site has been used since the 19th century and now houses one of the largest astronomical research groups in the United Kingdom with 170 staff.
