Cambridge has awarded the MB BChir degree in medicine since around 1466. Large numbers of pre-clinical medical students have been taught in Cambridge since the early 19th century. The Clinical School now consists of 12 academic departments together with four interdepartmental research institutes. The School has over 1,200 academic and support staff and around 500 medical students.

The Clinical Skills Unit is an important area in which students learn practical clinical procedures in a number of simulated settings prior to using these practical skills with patients.
